“There is nothing as painful, or as simple, as doing what is right.” ― Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff.
Squad 312 is up against some formidable opponents. The Ra'haam, a sleeping consciousness, has seized control of the GIA agents and planted flowers in place of their eyes. There's Kaliis's sister, who will stop at nothing to get her brother back. And a clan of gremps with a grudge. The team faces a formidable task in saving the universe.
In this book, Auri's character comes out as a little juvenile. She delays addressing her powers and feelings for the majority of the book. And after training with the Eshvaren, she completely changes her mind, becomes totally committed, and is prepared to sacrifice herself in order to save the universe. While I support character growth, this felt too much like a light switch being flipped. But I really liked how Kal's character evolved and how he discovered how to be more open and vulnerable with the people he loves.
The main theme of this book is grief. Because every character interprets it in a unique way, it is shown extremely well. It has happened to every one of the characters at some point, and the authors do a good job of examining each of the events.
I like the plot twists regarding the ancestry of some people as well as Magellan's witty and snarky remarks. I didn't enjoy how the story ended on such a huge cliffhanger.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys action-packed adventures, is not afraid of life-changing plot twists, and wants to read about a true pairing couple.
